FAQ’s
Q: The class description shows pricing options for a 3, 4, or 5 week class series. But when I register for the class I am only able to register for one option.
A: The number of weeks in a class series is determined by the number of weeks in any given month. For example, August may have 5 Mondays and Tuesdays and 4 Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. So if you are registering for a class on Monday, you will be able to register for 5 classes, but not 3 or 4. The number of classes in a series is indicated on the calendar.
Q: Do I need a partner?
A: No. We try to balance the class for leads and follows so you do not need to bring your own partner. However, it is not always possible to have an exact match of leads to follows. Generally, we change partners several times during class so that nobody dances without a partner for long if the class is not evenly matched for leads and follows. Students are not required to change partners if they object, but it is strongly encouraged. Students learn much faster if they dance with a variety of partners.
Q: If I will have to miss a class in a series. Can I still register for the class series?
A: In most cases, yes. The instructor of the class determines whether this is possible. It may depend on how full the class is, the ratio of leads to follows, etc. Normally the instructors don’t mind if you are unable to attend a class. In most cases, you will be expected to pay for all the classes in the series even if you can’t attend all of them. It is usually not advisable to skip the first class in a series if you do not have previous experience in the dance that is being taught, though exceptions can be made at the instructor’s discretion.
Q: What should I wear to class?
A: People come to dance classes from work, school and play. We do not require anything specific for dress code. Gym cloths, leotards, yoga clothes, etc. are not necessary and are strongly discouraged.
Q: Do I need special shoes?
A: No. If you have ballroom dance shoes, bring them. But you do not need to buy special shoes for your first class. Leather soled shoes will work better than rubber if you have them. Be sure to wear shoes that will stay on your feet. Flip-flops, mules, slides and any shoes that do not have a back to them are discouraged. Platform shoes are also discouraged.
Q: What should I wear to a dance?
A: We do not require anything specific for dress code. We suggest smart or dressy casual. For the ladies: dress pants or cocktail dresses. For the gentlemen: dress pants or kakis with collared shirts. You will not be turned away if you wear jeans. These are just our suggestions.
Q: Where can I buy ballroom dance shoes?
A: There are many sources. Here are a few we can recommend.
Star Dance Shop in Lynnwood
Petticoat Junction in Lynnwood
Centerstage Dance Shop in University District
Emerlad City Dance Boutique in Tukwila by appointment.
Q: Where should I park?
A: Parking on the street is free after 6:00 p.m. There is also a parking lot directly across the street that charges $5 in the evening, and many other pay lots in the area.
